Harambee Stars forward Job Ochieng endured a frustrating evening at the Reale Arena as Real Sociedad collapsed late to suffer a 3-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid in La Liga.
Despite producing a standout performance in Sociedad’s previous outing, where he scored once and provided two assists in a thrilling 3-2 win over Elche, Ochieng started on the bench.
Head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo introduced the Kenyan winger in the 71st minute to replace Ander Barrenetxea as the home side sought to break a goalless stalemate.
However, the match turned sharply against the hosts in the 84th minute when Ochieng found himself at the center of the decisive breakthrough.
A deep cross from Atletico’s Marc Pubill struck Ochieng’s left hand as he attempted to block the delivery, prompting the referee to award a penalty.
Alejandro Grimaldo stepped up and calmly slotted the spot-kick down the middle to put the visitors ahead.
The late setback opened the floodgates for Atletico, who doubled their lead shortly after when Grimaldo set up Jonathan David.
The Canadian striker received the ball 25 yards out, drove past the Sociedad defense, and drilled a low, left-footed strike into the bottom corner.
Atletico put the game entirely out of reach deep into stoppage time through Giuliano Simeone.
The Argentine forward, son of head coach Diego Simeone, collected a pass from Dávid Hancko, outpaced his markers into the penalty area, and finished calmly to seal the 3-0 victory.
The home defeat marks Real Sociedad’s third loss of the La Liga campaign, leaving Matarazzo’s side 12th in the standings on seven points.
