A 26-year-old woman is now behind bars herself after police caught her trying to sneak marijuana into a police station to her incarcerated boyfriend, stashed inside a loaf of bread.

Bernice Achieng’ walked into Buruburu Police Station carrying what looked like an ordinary, unsealed loaf of bread for her partner, who was already in custody.

But something about the loaf caught the attention of officers on duty, prompting a closer look.

Their instincts paid off, because tucked inside the bread were five rolls of bhang and a matchbox, while a further search turned up seven more rolls hidden in the pocket of her jacket, twelve rolls in total.

Achieng’ was arrested on the spot and now finds herself sharing a cell block with the very person she’d come to visit, as the exhibits are held pending arraignment.

The incident is the second of its kind reported in the Nairobi area in recent days.

Just days earlier, an 18-year-old woman was accused of trying a similar stunt at Ruai Police Station, only this time, the contraband wasn’t drugs, but escape tools.

Christine Njoki Gitau reportedly showed up at the station asking to see three friends who’d been arrested over robbery-with-violence and gang rape allegations.

When officers searched the food parcel she’d brought along, they found a pair of pliers and a pair of shears buried beneath a layer of rice, tools investigators believe were meant to help the trio break out of custody.
