Today, the two major teachers’ unions, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), declined a lunch offer from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Collins Oyuu, representing KNUT, and Akelo Misori, representing KUPPET, walked out of the talks convened by the TSC, which were aimed at averting a strike planned by the unions for their members starting next Monday.
The negotiations ended in disarray as the unions rejected the TSC’s offer. Despite the discussions, the officials from both KNUT and KUPPET confirmed that the strike scheduled for Monday is still on.
During the talks held at the Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete, the TSC proposed implementing Phase II of the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). However, they did not address the unions’ other demands, leading to the breakdown in negotiations.
The TSC had invited the unions in an attempt to prevent the strike, but the teachers argued that the CBA was already in effect and their additional concerns were not met.
