Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been removed from office after the Senate upheld her impeachment by the Meru County Assembly.

In a decisive vote, 26 senators supported the first charge of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, leading to her removal. Meanwhile, 14 senators abstained, and four voted in her favor.

On the second charge of gross misconduct, the Senate’s decision mirrored the first, with 26 senators voting for her impeachment, two against, and 14 abstaining.

The third charge, abuse of office, saw 27 senators voting to uphold it, while only one opposed, and 14 abstained.

Speaker Amason Kingi, announcing the Senate’s decision, stated, “Pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33 of the County Government Act, and Standing Order 86 of the Senate Standing Orders, the Senate has resolved to remove from office by impeachment Hon. Kawira Mwangaza, the Governor of Meru County. The governor accordingly ceases to hold office.”

This marks the third time Mwangaza faced impeachment proceedings in the Senate since her election in August 2022. While the first impeachment was handled by a committee, the second and third were decided by the full Senate.
