Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi today urged retired president, Uhuru Kenyatta to emulate his colleagues from civilized nations who stop meddling in the political affairs of their countries immediately they relinquish power.

According to Wandayi, a huge embarrassment from Kenyans awaits the former president should not heed calls to retire peacefully and stop undermining president William Ruto.

He was speaking at Sawagongo national school in Siaya county where he led a team of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders and the school alumni in a funds drive in aid of the recently upgraded institution.

“It is not common in the communities of developed nations and civilized people for a retired president to meddle in the political affairs of the country” said Wandayi adding “you must remain a nationalist”.

Wandayi said Uhuru Kenyatta’s plans to help the opposition will not succeed.

He accused the former president of giving former prime minister, Raila Odinga and the ODM false hopes during the last general elections.

“You were not honest with us. You would tell us during the day that you were with us and sing a different tune at night” said Wandayi adding that lack of genuine support from Kenyatta costed the late Raila the presidency.

The cabinet secretary’s sentiments were supported by Rangwe MP, Lillian Gogo who urged the former president not to stoop too low.

“Once you have served as a president, you are supposed to be a statesman who can be consulted on matters governance” said Dr Gogo.

Addressing the occasion, ODM national chairperson, Gladys Wanga hailed president Ruto for ensuring equitable sharing of resources across the country.

Wanga further hailed Nyanza residents for turning up in large numbers to welcome president Ruto during his just concluded tour of the region.

The Homabay county governor said the region was fully behind president Ruto who, she added, had made a difference in the area.

“This broad-based government has made a difference in this region – difference that is visible in terms of development” she said.

The occasion was also addressed by the principal secretary for petroleum, Kello Harsama who urged local residents to emulate their counterparts from Northern Kenya who have already made up their mind to vote in Ruto during next year’s general elections.
