Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegui 33, who competed in the Paris Olympics last month, has succumbed to her burn injuries she sustained at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city.

She suffered severe burns covering over 75% of her body after an alleged attack by her boyfriend, according to police reports.

Cheptegui was in critical condition following the incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Jeremiah Ole Kosiom, the Trans Nzoia County police commander told the media that Cheptegui’s boyfriend, identified as Daniel Ndiema Marangach, also sustained burns in the incident.

The attack has been described as a domestic dispute.

The 33 year-old-marathoner finished 44th in the last Paris Olympics.
