A perceived family supremacy battle within the Odinga family became evident today during the ODM @20 celebrations in Mombasa.
The day’s events seemed to showcase two family members competing over the future direction of the ODM party.
Winnie Odinga, daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, notably suggested that the management of “broad based matters” was beyond the capabilities of the party’s current leader, Oburu Oginga, who is her uncle.
The comments, which have sparked discussion on social media, saw Winnie stating that broad-based politics should be handled by someone the party’s base trusts.
“When it came to the matter of broad based government, people of ODM trusted Baba Raila Odinga, to manage that relationship. We need to go back to the people and have NDC and see who the people want to pick to manage that relationship,” said Winnie.
These statements clearly indicated that Winnie did not have full confidence that her uncle is competent enough to handle the matters concerning the broad-based government structure.
Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, seemingly trying not to appear infuriated by his niece’s comments, downplayed the tension lightly. He noted that the matter would be settled back home.
“Mtoto wangu Winnie Odinga ameongea mambo ya Broad based government, hio nitaongea nay eye kinyumbani. Mimi nitaendelea vile Raila alikuwa akiendelea na kutaka zitimizwe, sitakuwa na uwoga wowote,” the Senator replied, suggesting he would continue his leadership without fear and follow in Raila’s footsteps.
