By FLEVIAN GEOFFREY: Migori Governor, Ochillo Ayacko has stepped into the center of a simmering raw over public land in Nyatike, asserting that both national and county-owned land can be legally leased to private investors, provided constitutional protocols are strictly followed.

The Governor’s remarks come as a direct response to growing friction regarding a proposal to lease land in Nyatike Constituency to his predecessor, former Governor Okoth Obado.

Governor Ayacko emphasized that his administration operates within the bounds of the law, noting that the County Assembly holds the delegated authority to approve leases for investment purposes.

“My leadership, in collaboration with the County Assembly, has the authority to allow an investor to lease land, provided that it will benefit Migori County residents,” Ayacko stated.

He further clarified that no investor would be permitted to occupy public land without a “proper legal path,” dismissing claims of procedural shortcuts.

Dr Ayacko challenged critics to move their grievances from political platforms to official channels, urging them to join Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) during scheduled public participation forums.

“I am asking the leaders who are against the leasing of that land to join MCAs on the day of public participation to give their views on why they are against the leasing of public land,” the Governor said.

Stiff Political Opposition

Despite the Governor’s assurances, the proposed lease has met resistance from key local legislators.

Migori County Woman Representative Fatuma Mohamed and Nyatike Member of Parliament Tom Odege have taken a staunch stand against the move.

The duo has labeled the initiative a “scheme for land grabbing” rather than a legitimate investment opportunity.

They have vowed to block any attempts to lease land within Nyatike, citing concerns over the protection of community interests and public resources.

As the debate intensifies, all eyes now turn to the County Assembly, where the public participation process will likely serve as the ultimate battleground for the future of the Nyatike land.
