BY FLEVIAN GEOFFREY: Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers in Migori County have come out strongly to debunk reports that they earn between Sh4,000 and Sh8,000.
They escribed the reports as malicious propaganda clarifiying that their actual remuneration is significantly higher and aligned with their professional qualifications.
While addressing press at Ngenge ECDE center on behalf of the teachers employed by the county government, Hulda Ogutu, a local teacher pointed out that teachers holding certificates earn Sh28,650, while those with diploma receive Sh39,850.
“No teacher employed on permanent and pensionable terms is being paid the meager amounts being quoted on social media,” she said.
Her sentimrnts were echoed by Nickson Ouma of God Ngoche ECDE center.
Roseline Otieno, County Chief Officer in charge of Education, Youth, and Sports, on the other hand called on the residents and politicians to cease spreading rumors, emphasizing the need to distinguish between Board of Management (BOM)teachers and those on Permanent and Pensionable terms.
This comes after a tense session was witnessed earlier at the Senate Committee on Education, where Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko was questioned on why the county’s ECDE salaries allegedly fell below the standards set by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Governor Ayacko defended his administration’s record while shifting blame to the National Government.
The county chief argued that the consistent delay and inadequacy of funds released to counties have crippled local operations.
“The National Government must release funds on time and increase the allocation to ensure counties can run their programs and pay their staff smoothly,” the Governor appealed.
