Elect based on competence and track record not money, DG Owili tells Kisumu electorates

Kisumu Deputy Governor Matthew Owili has called on the electorate of Kisumu County to choose leaders based on their ability to serve and their track record, rather than the amount of money they distribute.

The deputy county chief, who was addressing traders at K-City, noted that monetary influence has previously led to the election of leaders who lack the necessary qualifications for office.

Dr Owili is eyeing the gubernatorial seat, a position that has attracted numerous strong candidates, including Senator Tom Ojienda, Joshua Oron (MP for Kisumu Central), Aduma Owuor, and Rosa Buyu (MPs for Nyakach and Kisumu West, respectively).

“Let us not be swayed by money. The money that is being flashed evrytime will not allow you elect the leaders who have what it takes to develop this lakeside city,” said Dr Owili.

“I have worked with Prof Anyang Nyong’o for almost ten years, given an opportunity I will continue from where he shall stop.”

Dr Owili pledged to meet with all small and medium-scale business owners within Kisumu County to ensure they formulate a working strategy that will lead to their empowerment.

“At K-City, which is a private property, we have more than 400 businesses and many people are either employed directly or indirectly. So such establishments are important to our economy and as I will be taking over from Governor Nyong’o I have full confidence that the good work will continue,” he added.

The business community in Kisumu has been facing a myriad of challenges, ranging from evictions to internal wrangles.
