Shrewd duo: Mother and daughter face Sh40million fraud charges in Karatina

KARATINA: Mother and daughter are set to appear before a Magistrate court sitting in Karatina today, August 19, 2026, to face the legal charges in relation to a multi-million-shilling betrayal that shattered their own family from within.

Mary Muthoni Njogu and her daughter, Veronica Wambui Ng’ang’a, were apprehended yesterday by detectives from the Land Fraud Investigation Unit (LFIU).

Their arrest follows a relentless investigation into a cold, calculated scheme that saw prime ancestral property secretly stripped away from rightful heirs.

The deceit began unspooling when a family member, acting on behalf of his siblings, grew suspicious and lodged a formal complaint.

What LFIU detectives uncovered was a systematic, three-year operation.

Between 2020 and 2023, while the rest of the family carried on with daily life, Mary and Veronica quietly executed secret transfers, stripping away valuable land in Karatina worth an estimated Sh40 million.

They re-registered the prime parcels into their own names and controlled business entities, deliberately erasing the rest of the family from the titles.

The paper trail, however, proved undeniable.

Following a thorough review of the evidence gathered by the LFIU, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) ordered the immediate prosecution of the duo.

Now stepping into the dock at the Karatina Law Courts, the pair face serious criminal charges, including Conspiracy to Defraud and Fraudulent Procurement of Title, bringing a dramatic end to a years-long ploy, but leaving a family to mourn a trust that can never be recovered.
