BY DAMARIS AWUOR: Police in Nairobi have intensified efforts to curb the trafficking of bhang after a dramatic motorcycle chase led to the arrest of a suspect and the recovery of a significant drug consignment.

Officers arrested a man identified as John Mwangi, alias “Bombay,” after the chase ended near Ree Supermarket. Mwangi was reportedly riding a motorcycle with a female passenger when the pair encountered a police roadblock.

According to police, the rider attempted to evade officers by accelerating past the checkpoint. However, he lost control of the motorcycle after hitting a speed bump, causing it to crash. The female passenger reportedly fled into the crowd amid the ensuing confusion and remains at large.

Mwangi was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. A subsequent search of his luggage reportedly turned up 300 rolls of bhang. Officers also recovered an additional three kilogrammes of bhang, wrapped in yellow polythene and strapped to the motorcycle seat.

Mwangi was taken to Kimuchu Police Station, where he is being processed pending arraignment in court.

Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the recovered substances and determine whether Mwangi was acting alone or as part of a wider trafficking network. The suspect will have an opportunity to respond to the allegations in court, where the prosecution will be required to present evidence supporting the charges against him.
