Babu Owino on a journey to succeed Raila Odinga in Luo Nyanza.

Like the proverbial chick that eventually grows into a crow, Babu Owino is emerging as a significant political figure in Luo Nyanza.

With his extensive travels across the country, he’s quickly winning over the hearts of many. His recent visit to Majengo in Mombasa County drew a massive crowd, reminiscent of those seen at Raila Odinga’s gatherings along the coast.

As a second-term Member of Parliament, Owino seems to be following in the footsteps of Raila Odinga as a potential kingpin who could influence the voting patterns in Luo Nyanza.

He shares similarities with Odinga, who solidified his position after being elected for a second term in 1997.

While Odinga had previously hinted at either Wycliffe Oparanya or Hassan Joho succeeding him, some politicians from Luo Nyanza advocate for an open succession race.

They argue that the region, being the party’s political stronghold, deserves a fair chance at leadership.

Raila’s sister and Kisumu Woman Representative, Ruth Odinga, emphasized that since Nyanza comprises the bulk of ODM’s support base, it should not be excluded from participating in the election of its leader if Raila’s AU ambitions lead to a vacant position.
