Death toll rise to 9 after more bodies retrieved from River Kwa Muswii.

The death toll from Friday’s tragic drowning incident at the section of River Kwa Muswii, which intersects the Kasikeu-Sultan Hamud road in Makueni County, has risen to 9 as residents discovered more bodies downstream on Saturday.

“We have rescued 14 people and recovered 8 bodies. There are 10 reported missing bodies,” stated Makueni Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili.

The accident occurred when a truck carrying sand and passengers attempted to cross the swollen river. Unfortunately, the swift currents proved too powerful, leading to the devastating outcome.

Red Cross said it had rescued 14 people by nightfall following an incident earlier in the day where a lorry was swept away by flood waters at Sultan Hamud.

River Kwa Muswii has a history of accidents that have claimed numerous lives in the past.
