Kazi na Boda; Kiambu boss Wamatangi launches new initiative

GATUNDU: Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has officially rolled out the “Kazi na Boda” empowerment programme, a Sh120 million initiative designed to transform the county’s bodaboda sector into a self-reliant economic powerhouse.

Speaking in Gatundu South on Thursday, the Governor issued the first wave of cheques to Saccos across Ndarugu, Kiganjo, Kiamwangi, and Ngenda wards. Under the structured plan, each registered Sacco is set to receive up to Sh2 million over two years to bolster their savings and expand credit facilities for members.

A key pillar of the programme is protecting youth from exploitative financial practices. Governor Wamatangi noted that the fund serves as a critical alternative to high-interest online lenders that often trap riders in cycles of poverty.

“This support will enable members to access affordable loans for economic development, including purchasing their own motorcycles without the burden of predatory interest,” Wamatangi said.

The Governor cited the success of the 2024 pilot with the Kimwi Boda Boda Sacco in Githurai as proof of the model’s viability.

After receiving a Sh1 million injection, the Sacco’s asset base grew from Sh9.9 million to Sh12.3 million by December 2025, a clear indicator that structured county support can trigger significant private wealth growth.
