Suspected malice as UDA suspends elections 48 hours to scheduled time

The UDA National Elections Board (NEB) has announced the suspension of the county-level elections scheduled for June 10, following an order issued by the Political Parties Tribunal on June 6.

The anticipated elections were expected to see a showdown between Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s faction and a team aligned with Embakasi North MP James Gakuya. Sakaja had emerged as the frontrunner for the county chairmanship position after securing the support of 240 delegates out of a possible 340 during the constituency-level elections.

In an official notice sent to Kondele News and signed by NEB chair Eng Anthony Mwaura, the UDA Board stated, “The Board of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) hereby issues an official notice regarding the suspension of the County-Level grassroots election for Nairobi County, which was initially scheduled for 10th June 2024. This suspension is issued pursuant to an order issued on 6th June 2024, by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, halting the election for Nairobi County. The Board will provide further communication regarding the rescheduled date and any additional instructions in due course.”

The suspension of the elections could potentially fuel political tensions, especially considering earlier remarks by the Nyeri Governor regarding alleged plans to remove certain officials from their positions.
