One die and another sustain fractured legs at a gold mine in Siaya County

Tragedy struck today in Ongoro Village, South East Alego, when a mining shaft collapsed, resulting in one fatality and another person escaping with serious injuries.

Erick Ochieng, identified as the deceased, tragically lost his life after being trapped inside the approximately 80-foot-deep shaft.

The survivor, who sustained fractured legs in the incident, was quickly transported to Siaya County Referral Hospital for treatment and is currently recovering.

According to a police incident report obtained by Kondele News, the incident underscores the dangers associated with mining activities in the area.

“The Police officers from Kogelo Police station established that indeed the gold mine site had collapsed and one Ochieng Erick aged 30yrs was still trapped inside about 80 feet deep while covered by a heap of soil, also one Gordon Okelo aged 52yrs had been rescued and rushed to Siaya County  Refferal hospital having sustained fractures on his legs,” stated the report.

Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo later confirmed that the body of Erick Ochieng had been retrieved from the shaft with visible injuries.
