“We are coming,” a message from a Gen Z that led to cancellation of fundraiser to be attended by Rachel Ruto

“We are coming for the fundraiser on June 30. May God bless you,” read the message sent to Rev. Simon Mutahi, the presiding clergy of Lavington United Church. It sent chills down his spine, compelling him to cancel the fundraising event.

The message followed confirmation from First Lady Rachel Ruto that she would attend the church as the chief guest for their harambee, aimed at completing a perimeter wall. This event was part of a campaign by Gen Zs to enforce a ban on politicians speaking from church pulpits.

In a letter to Rev. Mutahi, a young man identifying himself as Mwabili Mwagodi expressed outrage that the church would welcome politicians despite ongoing protests:

“Good evening Reverend, my name is Mwabili Mwagodi. I initiated the campaign to remove politicians from Kenyan church pulpits. I see you have invited Mrs. Rachel Ruto to your church for a fundraiser. This message is to notify you that we are coming for the fundraiser… God bless you.”

Known for their determined stance, these Gen Zs are tribe-less, party-less, and region-less, simply identifying as Gen Z. Their recent actions have reverberated across the nation, prompting the government to increase surveillance at State House.

Earlier on June 30, a group of youths stormed the parliamentary building with the intention of meeting lawmakers who voted in favor of the withdrawn Finance Bill 2024.
