“No Thank you sir,” LSK reveal why they turned down President Ruto’s appointment

The Law Society of Kenya has rejected appointments to the Task Force tasked with investigating pending bills, and auditing debt citing its unconstitutionality.

The task force, which included LSK President Faith Odhiambo, was established by President William Ruto.

This development coincides with President Ruto facing numerous challenges just two years into his presidency; recently he was forced to withdraw the Finance Bill 2024.

In a statement issued on Saturday, July 6, LSK emphasized that the task force remains unconstitutional.

Therefore, the Society asserted that neither its President nor any member should participate in the task force, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the constitution.

“Taking cognizance of the provisions of Article 229 of the constitution and the interpretation of the said provisions by the court, it is our considered view that the establishment of the task force is unconstitutional.

“The mandate to audit public debt rests with the office of the Auditor-General.” LSK noted in the statement released on Saturday, July 6, 2024.

The society further cautioned the President against usurping the powers of other constitutional office holders.

LSK also called on the Head of State to refrain from assuming the role of the Auditor-General in executing her constitutional mandate.
