Assistant Chief attacked for stopping Disco Matanga

ALEGO-USONGA: Police in Alego Usonga Sub-county have detained a 28-year-old man suspected of masterminding an attack that left a local sub-chief seriously injured.

The suspect, identified as Stephen Onyango, is believed to have led a group of youths in assaulting the administrator after he stopped a disco matanga in Nyalgunga village, Alego Usonga.

“He heard loud music in his area of jurisdiction and proceeded to Nyalgunga ‘A’ village, Nyalugunga sub-location, Alego Usonga Sub-county, Siaya County. Upon arrival, he found a night vigil in progress and attempted to switch off the loud music. A group of young men, armed with pangas and other crude weapons, emerged and began assaulting him,” stated a police report.

The report further noted, “Mourners responded swiftly, rescuing the victim from the attackers. He was taken to Siaya County Referral Hospital. Kenya Police Service and DCI officers visited the victim at the facility and established that he had sustained deep head injuries and was in an unstable condition.”

The officers immediately launched a search for the perpetrators. So far, one suspect has been arrested and is expected to aid in apprehending the others. They also recovered a machete believed to have been used in the assault, which has been kept as evidence.

The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Siaya Magistrate Court on Monday, July 22.
