A 67-year-old woman has been accused of masterminding a daring plot to steal over Ksh. 7 million from a prominent businesswoman in Nairobi.
The accused, Pamela Akinyi Wara, allegedly conspired with Hesbon Onyango Nyamweya, a notorious convict serving a life sentence at Kamiti Maximum Prison, to execute the heist.
According to court documents, the scheme unfolded between May 1, 2020, and September 17, 2020.
During this period, Akinyi and Nyamweya are said to have orchestrated the theft of a staggering Ksh. 7.6 million from Purity Karambu Laird, a well-known entrepreneur.
The court heard that Akinyi knowingly retained the stolen funds, despite being aware of their dubious origin.
Nyamweya, a convicted sex offender with a grim reputation, is currently serving time at Kamiti for his previous crimes.
However, even behind bars, he allegedly managed to coordinate with Akinyi to pull off this elaborate scam.
Appearing before the Milimani Law Courts on Friday, Akinyi faced three serious charges: stealing, handling stolen goods, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Despite the gravity of the accusations, she maintained her innocence, pleading not guilty to all charges.
In a dramatic courtroom scene, the elderly Akinyi was granted release on a Ksh. 2 million bond.
The judge ordered her to return to court on September 5, 2024, when the case will continue.
This case has sent shockwaves through the community, raising questions about the reach of criminal networks even within the confines of maximum-security prisons.
As the trial date approaches, all eyes will be on the courtroom to see how this intriguing saga unfolds.
