Sramble for cheap Guiness beer ends Quickmart’s happy hour prematurely

Quickmart supermarket has celebrated her 18th anniversary in a ceremony marked with jaw dropping discounts on most household items in a happy hour promotion.

However, the promotion prematurely ended in the supermarket chain’s Tom Mboya branch after hundreds of shoppers flocked the branch, making it difficult to control the crowd.

A cashier told Kondele News that the crowd had gathered way before 11.18 a.m.

Fearing damage of property and eruption of fights in the premises, they had to tell the customers that they had run out of beer.

“Among the items on great discount was liquor, especially beer that was going for sh 190 instead of the everyday sh250. The scramble was so bad that we had to tell them that we had run out,” said the cashier.

In the celebrations held at the chain’s Milimani branch, the Chief Marketing Officer Betty Wamaitha noted that their biggest milestone is becoming the second largest retailer in the country.

She added that having an opportunity to create employment for Kenyans is yet another great achievement.

The supermarket was first established in 2006 in Nakuru City.

It then moved to Ruiru, and in 2019 the chain established a Ruaka branch.

In 2020, the supermarket established a Lavington branch under the name “Quickmart: Fresh and Easy”.

It merged with Tumaini supermarket and established more branches in Nairobi, Nakuru and Kiambu.

At the time, the supermarket has 60 branches across 16 counties being the second largest retailer in the country employing over 7,300 people.

Under its Fresh and Easy logo, Quickmart promotes at least 14,000 farmers in the country by purchasing fresh farm produce.
