Teenager takes own life after failed attempts to sell father’s cow

KURIA WEST: Police in Kuria West, Migori County are investigating the suspected suicide of a 17-year-old boy, who was found dead shortly after his attempt to sell his father’s cow at a local cattle auction was thwarted.

The teenager’s body was discovered hanging from a rope in a bush a few hours after auction officials refused to let him sell the cow without his father’s identification card.

The boy had requested time to go home and retrieve the ID but did not return.

Rose Ooko, the assistant chief of Nyamaharaga sub-location, expressed uncertainty about what led the boy to take such a drastic step.

She speculated that the boy may have been overwhelmed by the prospect of facing his father’s potential disciplinary actions for selling the cow without permission.

The body has been moved to Migori County Level Four Mortuary for an autopsy as part of the ongoing police investigation.

This incident has drawn attention to the troubling rise in suicide rates across the country.
