Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Athi River are probing a robbery incident where two passengers—a man and a woman—were robbed of over Sh409,000 and other valuables by a gang pretending to offer a lift to Mombasa.
The victims were waiting for a Mombasa-bound bus in Mlolongo yesterday when the driver of a private vehicle, appearing to carry three passengers, offered them a ride. With transport challenges heightened on Christmas Eve, the two unsuspectingly accepted.
However, the “good Samaritans” revealed their true intent upon reaching the Simba Cement area in Athi River.
The gang brandished daggers, blindfolded the victims, restrained them with ropes, and began robbing them of their valuables.
The male victim, from Kiambu town, lost Sh340,000 through bank account withdrawals using mobile banking apps, Sh20,000 from his Mpesa, and a Samsung Galaxy phone and power bank valued at Sh75,000.
The female victim, a Mombasa resident, was robbed of Sh49,000 from her Mpesa account and several personal belongings.
Abandoned in Limuru
After the robbery, the victims were abandoned in Ngarariga, Limuru. Good Samaritans assisted them to Ngarariga Police Station, where they reported the crime.
Fortunately, no serious injuries were inflicted. The case has been referred to DCI Athi River for further investigation.
