Ugenya widow escapes death narrowly after arsonist gutted down house

UGENYA: A 63-year-old widow and her two grandchildren narrowly escaped death after their house was set ablaze in a suspected arson attack in Humwend B village, Masat West sub-location, Ugenya sub-county.

Monica Mudenyo and her grandchildren—Joseph Kathambi, 15, and Tracy, 13—were fast asleep when they were jolted awake by the raging fire consuming their house.

The children, both students at Humwend Junior Secondary School, cried out for help, prompting neighbors to rush to their aid just in time.

“By the time the neighbors responded, the house was already engulfed in flames,” said area Assistant Chief Julius Ahenda. “They managed to rescue the three through a window and rushed them to the hospital.”

Ms. Mudenyo sustained serious burns on her face and limbs, while her grandchildren also suffered injuries. The three are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Ukwala.

Authorities suspect foul play, with police and DCI officers actively investigating the incident.

“During the crime scene inspection, we found a five-liter container with a strong petrol stench, indicating a possible arson attack,” Ahenda revealed.

Further evidence recovered includes a woolen cap and partially burned dry grass behind the house, suggesting the suspect may have fled after being overwhelmed by the heat.

Unfortunately, all belongings inside the house were reduced to ashes.
