Fisherman drowns on duty in Lake Victoria, Rarieda

RARIEDA: Fishermen at Kamariga Beach have launched a search for the body of George Ochieng, 33, who drowned while on a routine fishing expedition last night.

According to Kagwa Sub-location Assistant Chief, Reuben Okoth, Ochieng was with his colleagues when he slipped and fell into the lake while adjusting a fishing lamp.

“The deceased was an experienced fisherman. Unfortunately, as he was fixing a lamp used in fishing, he lost his balance and fell into the lake, said the administrator.

Local traditions hold that a drowned body typically floats after three days, prompting the victim’s family to camp at the lake’s shores in anticipation of retrieval efforts.

Authorities and fellow fishermen continue to monitor the situation as the search for Ochieng’s body intensifies.
