NAIROBI: Police have arrested a man believed to be the source of a firearm that recently caused a stir after two women shared its photo on WhatsApp.
The suspect, Felix Omondi Ng’idi—a police officer attached to the DCI Crime Scene Investigations unit in Starehe—is alleged to have provided the firearm to the two women.
Earlier in the week, detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, working alongside their counterparts from the DCI in Nyando, apprehended Sharon Auma and Nancy Atieno Obura in connection with the incident.
The arrests followed a viral WhatsApp status update by Sharon Auma, who posted a photo of herself brandishing a Canik pistol. Her caption reportedly carried a warning that any man attempting to dump her would face “serious consequences.”
“The arrest follows a report received concerning Sharon Auma, who decided to spice up her WhatsApp status with a photo of herself wielding a pistol while issuing an ominous threat,” police told reporters during an earlier briefing.
The unsettling post prompted swift action from investigators, who tracked Sharon to Awasi town and arrested her.
During interrogation, she disclosed that the weapon was being kept at a rented two-bedroom house belonging to her friend and co-accused, Nancy Atieno Obura.
A search of the house led to the recovery of the Canik pistol, which had been hidden in clothing inside a basin under the bed. Officers also found an empty magazine and a counterfeit motorcycle number plate bearing the registration KMGG 805M.
Following further investigations, authorities linked the firearm to Officer Ng’idi, who was taken into custody.
All three suspects are currently being held and are expected to be arraigned at the Nyando Law Courts.
