How a Milimani Magistrate moved hearts by saving a house maid from going to jail over debt

NAIROBI: A Milimani Magistrate moved hearts during a virtual court session after leading a spontaneous mini fund drive to save a woman from going to jail.

In the online hearing, where various lawyers were representing their clients before Hon. Asiago Amoro, one particular case stood out — that of a housemaid facing charges over an unpaid debt.

The woman, appearing virtually while holding her baby, admitted she owed money to the complainant but explained that she was unable to pay due to her low income. She earned just KSh 5,000 a month working as a housemaid and struggled to make ends meet.

“I’m left with no choice but to send you to jail,” the magistrate said solemnly, moved by the woman’s honesty and circumstances.

Just then, one of the lawyers offered to pay the debt on her behalf. Another quickly followed suit, and then another. Within five minutes, the full amount was raised, the debt settled, and the case closed — sparing the woman from jail time.
