Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, has withdrawn from the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania, citing concerns that participation could hinder their preparation for upcoming major competitions.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) made the announcement in a press statement on Monday, revealing that the decision was based on a thorough evaluation by the team’s technical bench, led by Head Coach Benni McCarthy.

“This decision has been made following recommendations and advice from the team’s technical bench after a thorough assessment of the prevailing conditions, which were deemed unsuitable for the team’s participation and overall preparation,” FKF stated.
According to the federation, the decision aligns with Kenya’s broader goal of preparing adequately for the African Nations Championship (CHAN), set for August.
“Our focus now shifts fully to ensuring optimal readiness for the CHAN qualifiers. We remain committed to providing the national team with the best possible environment to compete and represent the country with pride,” FKF added.
The Harambee Stars had arrived in Tanzania on July 19, 2025, ready to participate in the regional tournament. However, after internal consultations and an assessment of the training facilities and logistical conditions, the team opted to withdraw. They are expected to return to Nairobi immediately.
FKF further noted that arrangements are already underway to resume training under better conditions in Nairobi, as the team sharpens its focus on CHAN.
Coach Benni McCarthy, who took over earlier this year, has consistently emphasized the need for structured and high-standard preparation, both in training and match-day logistics.
President William Ruto, on July 16, reaffirmed his support for Harambee Stars as they gear up for the continental competition.
