MUMIAS: Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala is set to face criminal charges after allegedly landing a helicopter at the Mumias Sports Complex during the national secondary school games finals.
The dramatic incident unfolded during halftime of a high-stakes match between Musingu High School and St. Joseph’s Kitale, when the aircraft descended onto the pitch in full view of thousands of students, teachers, education officials, and spectators.
Confirming the incident, Western Region Police Commander Issa Muhamoud said both Malala and the helicopter pilot will be prosecuted for multiple offences, including endangering public safety, creating a public nuisance, trespass, and violating civil aviation regulations.
“It was not an emergency landing and it was not an accident,” said Muhamoud.
The police chief described the act as a clear breach of several laws, including the Civil Aviation Act, the Basic Education Act, Ministry of Education guidelines on child safety, and the Penal Code.
“This was a clear violation of civil aviation rules, the Basic Education Act, the Ministry of Education guidelines on children’s safety, and the Penal Code.”
Former Kakamega Senator Malala had arrived at the sports complex to watch the football match between Musingu High School and St. Anthony Boys, Kitale.
Muhamoud criticised the move as “irresponsible, reckless, and a national embarrassment,” accusing Malala of using the event as a political stage.
“He was probably seeking a political photo opportunity but caused a direct threat to the safety and dignity of Kenyans.”
Police said the unapproved helicopter landing disrupted the event and caused panic among learners and educators, heightening the risk of stampede or tragedy.
“The helicopter could have crashed, learners could have trampled on each other, and lives could have been lost,” the regional police chief added.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the Ministry of Education, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have jointly launched a probe into the incident.
“Full criminal investigations are underway,” Muhamoud confirmed, assuring the public that accountability would follow.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of school children at public functions.
“We will not allow disorder, arrogance or impunity to endanger the lives of our future generation. The law will take its full course.”
