NAIROBI: Detectives from the Nairobi Region Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau have arrested the suspected ringleader behind a daring theft targeting a foreign tourist at the Maasai Mara Game Park.
The victim, a Greek national, had landed in Nairobi on August 5, 2025. The next day, he embarked on a trip to the Maasai Mara alongside his tour guide and an acquaintance he had met online — a man who introduced himself as “Jeremiah John.”
Once inside the park, “Jeremiah” vanished, taking with him three debit cards, a mobile phone, and a Seiko Crystal wristwatch.
Soon after, a staggering €25,000 was withdrawn from the tourist’s bank account.
Forensic investigations revealed “Jeremiah John” was an alias. The suspect was unmasked as Kenas Okello Oyugi, who was tracked to his Nairobi hideout and arrested.
During the operation, detectives recovered several mobile phones, the stolen wristwatch, Ksh 54,050 in cash, US dollars, and a brand-new tour trek bicycle suspected to have been bought with the stolen funds.
Oyugi is currently held at Central Police Station, awaiting arraignment as investigations continue.
