Safaricom PLC has scheduled a three-hour system upgrade for its M-Pesa platform on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 12:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m.
During this time, all M-Pesa services, including airtime purchases, will be temporarily unavailable.
The telecommunications giant stated that the upgrade is intended to enhance service reliability, security, and performance.
The company chose this time to minimize disruption for its customers and has apologized for any inconvenience.
Safaricom urged customers to plan their transactions accordingly before the maintenance window begins.
This announcement comes as Safaricom celebrates 18 years since the launch of M-Pesa. The mobile money service has transformed financial inclusion in Kenya, growing from 26.7% in 2006 to 83.7% in 2021.
M-Pesa has expanded its reach beyond Kenya and is now available in over 170 countries, serving more than 70 million customers.
It has also grown to serve over one million businesses and agents across eight countries, including Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Ghana, and Egypt. The service generated over Sh139.9 billion in revenue in 2024.
