Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has reiterated that ODM as a party does not stand any chance of winning the 2027 presidential election.
As a result, the Mombasa county boss has petitioned for an urgent Central Management Committee (CMC) meeting to address escalating divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement.
The aim of the meeting, according to the county chief is to establish a way forward with the ruling party and know how they will face the electorates in 2027.
“We did not win the 2022 elections and the coming one would not be easy because Raila Odinga is not there; we need to have a discussion with president William Ruto and forge a way forward,” said Nassir.
“As Deputy Party Leader, I have requested my party leader, Oburu Oginga, to urgently convene the CMC meeting,” Nassir stated. “The meeting will decide the party’s position regarding the 2027 elections and relations with the government.”
The call for a meeting comes at a critical juncture for ODM, which has been grappling with internal friction following the death of its longtime leader, Raila Odinga, in October 2025.
The primary bone of contention is the party’s approach toward President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
While a section of the party leadership is open to engaging with the President, a powerful faction, including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, and Siaya Governor James Orengo, has expressed strong reservations about a coalition with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
