UGENYA: Ugenya Member of Parliament David Ochieng has strongly criticized the recent arrest of politicians and aides with divergent political views, describing the moves as a threat to Kenya’s democratic space.
Speaking today, the third-term lawmaker noted that the arrest of Siaya Governor James Orengo’s bodyguard and other county officials on Saturday, March 7, did not rhyme with the country’s democratic principles.
The arrests occurred just ahead of President William Ruto’s visit to Bondo and Rarieda.
“We are calling on the authorities to stop arresting politicians simply because they hold divergent views. The country functions best when there is space for everyone, including those who believe the nation is heading in the wrong direction,” Mr Ochieng stated.
The lawmaker expressed his disappointment over the timing of the arrests, which coincided with the President’s tour of Siaya County to commission the Siaya Community Digital Hub.
“It is disheartening to learn that Governor Orengo’s bodyguard and other officers were picked up as the President’s visit was just hours away,” he added.
Ochieng also hit out at the frequent use of tear gas and the disruption of rallies or church services attended by opposition leaders.
He likened the current situation to the “Nyayo era,” where leaders faced arbitrary arrests and detention without clear cause.
“Why must some leaders be teargassed or stopped from holding rallies? It makes no sense at all,” the MP remarked.
The protests come after at least three county government officials were detained on Saturday for allegedly planning to disrupt presidential events in Bondo and Rarieda.
Reports indicate that the officers were released today, Monday, March 9.
