By MOURENE SCOVIAN: Hundreds of families residing in Mombasa’s Changamwe National Housing Estate have been ordered to vacate their homes by June 30, 2026, triggering widespread anxiety and immediate community protests.

The crisis was sparked by an official demand letter dated May 12, 2026, signed by J. Situma on behalf of the National Housing Corporation (NHC) Managing Director and CEO.

The strict 30-day notice of termination explicitly states that the State Department of Housing and Urban Development (SDHUD) intends to reclaim the land to pave the way for a new Affordable Housing Project.

In a swift rejoinder, gripped residents refused to back down.

Under the guidance of the civil society organization VOCAL Africa, affected tenants staged a peaceful protest inside the estate.

Protesters vehemently condemned the looming evictions as unlawful and forceful, pointing out the bitter irony that the mass displacement directly contradicts President William Ruto’s broader Affordable Housing Agenda.
