Leaders in Kisii County have welcomed the approval of a budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, stating that the fiscal plan will significantly improve local livelihoods and strengthen essential public services.
County Budget and Appropriations Committee Chairperson, Peter Otachi, confirmed that key development sectors have been heavily prioritized in the new budget, with critical resources directed toward infrastructure and health.
“The Department of Water and Sanitation received the lion’s share of to expand and enhance water infrastructure across the county,” Mr. Otachi said.
Mr Otachi noted that substantial funding has been channeled to grassroots medical facilities.
“We have increased the Medical Services Department’s allocation to to improve and fully equip all our Level 4 hospitals, including Nyamache and Ogembo,” he said.
“We will also further equip the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) and ensure that ambulances and essential medical supplies are consistently available.
“On education and social welfare, the chairperson highlighted targeted interventions for vulnerable learners.
“We have allocated for student bursaries and for a school feeding program targeting ECDE, PP1, and Grade 2 learners,” he stated, adding that agricultural value-addition also received a boost.
“We are also allocating to complete and equip the milk processing plant at the Agricultural Training Centre (ATC).
“The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Finance, Economic Planning, and ICT, Richard Atandi, praised the collaborative effort behind the budget’s formulation, noting its focus on public inclusivity.
“This budget puts our people first. It ensures they are fully involved and will directly benefit from county resources,” Mr Atandi said.
Echoing these sentiments, the County Assembly Speaker celebrated the milestone provisions within the bill:
“This budget reflects the true expectations of our people. For the first time, our children will receive milk in school, and advanced emergency ambulances will serve all sub-counties.
“County Assembly Majority Leader, Henry Moracha, reiterated the assembly’s commitment to basic development, stating, “We have passed a budget that prioritizes an ambulance in every single sub-county, alongside dedicated funds for roads, fuel, and clean water access”Nominated MCA Dolphine Bwari added that the budget represents a major victory for gender equity and rural development.”The biggest beneficiaries of this budget are the women of Kisii County,” Ms Bwari noted.
“Increased funding for clean water access will dramatically reduce the systemic challenges our women face, including walking long distances and encountering safety risks just to fetch water.”
