Four suspected gang members were shot dead and two others escaped with severe injuries after a fierce midnight shootout with police officers along the Eldoret–Kiplombe Road in Uasin Gishu County.

The gunfight erupted shortly after midnight on July 6, 2026, when patrol officers received actionable intelligence regarding a six-man gang dressed in military-style attire that was actively robbing members of the public.

Acting on the tip-off, a detachment of police officers advanced toward Greenfield Junction, where they intercepted six individuals matching the descriptions provided by victims.

Law enforcement officers ordered the group to stop and identify themselves, but the suspects defied the lawful commands, pulled out weapons, and opened fire on the officers.

The patrol team responded decisively to the imminent threat, engaging the armed suspects in a heavy exchange of fire.

When the dust settled, four of the suspects had been fatally wounded.

The remaining two gunmen managed to flee the scene under the cover of darkness, though detectives believe they escaped with severe gunshot wounds.

A coordinated, multi-agency manhunt has since been launched across the region to track them down.

A thorough sweep of the crime scene yielded a cache of operational items used by the gang to terrorize residents, including: loaded pistol, heavy breaking tools, specifically a wedge mallet and a wedge chisel, five mobile phones and four national identification cards, manila ropes and an undisclosed amount of cash

According to preliminary profiling by the National Police Service, the slain and fleeing individuals are suspected to be the mastermind syndicate behind a notorious wave of violent robberies that has plagued the entire North Rift region, specifically targeting households and businesses across Kitale, Kapenguria, Nandi, Marakwet, and Eldoret.

Hospitals and clinics across Uasin Gishu and neighboring counties have been put on high alert to report any patience seeking treatment for suspicious bullet wounds.
