Emmanuel Wanyonyi shutters a 27-year-old record in Monaco

Emmanuel Wanyonyi has shattered the ceiling and recorded a monumental piece of track history, prompting President William Ruto to lead Kenyan leaders in celebrating the middle-distance sensation after he broke the men’s 1,000-metre world record at the Monaco Diamond League.

Making his career debut over the rarely contested distance, the reigning Olympic and world 800m champion produced a breathtaking performance on Friday night, clocking a blistering 2:11.83. In doing so, Wanyonyi eclipsed the previous world record of 2:11.96, set by fellow Kenyan Noah Ngeny back in 1999, by 0.13 seconds, successfully ending a 27-year global wait for a new mark in the event.

In a swift congratulatory message, President Ruto hailed the extraordinary achievement as another proud milestone that showcases Kenya’s enduring dominance in global athletics.

Ruto noted that the historic feat demonstrated the sheer strength of Kenyan athletes on the world stage and filled the entire nation with immense pride, adding that such an outstanding milestone will undoubtedly inspire future generations of champions.

The praise echoed across the government cabinet, with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen describing the record-breaking run as definitive proof of the immense potential of Kenya’s youth.

Murkomen emphasized that Wanyonyi’s determination and hard work reaffirm the country’s athletics greatness, proving that young Kenyans can achieve unparalleled success both locally and internationally.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya also joined the celebrations, saluting the athlete’s unwavering discipline and belief that nothing is impossible, while Co-operatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya noted that Wanyonyi has firmly etched his name into the global annals of sports history through sheer resilience.

The historic world record marks another dominant chapter in Wanyonyi’s rapidly ascending career, solidifying his status as one of the brightest sports stars on the planet.
