Students at Riomego SDA Senior School in Nyamira County are expected to benefit from improved boarding facilities following the completion of two new dormitories funded by the M-Pesa Foundation.

The dormitories, valued at KSh35 million, were constructed under the Citizen of the Future programme, which seeks to improve access to quality education.

The project was officially launched on Friday by Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo together with officials from Safaricom and the education sector.

School principal Kennedy Omariba said the institution has been facing pressure on accommodation due to the growing student population.

He said the school currently has more than 740 learners and recently admitted 354 Grade 10 students.

According to the principal, the new dormitories are fully equipped with beds, mattresses, electricity and water.

“We are proud because of the support from the Safaricom Foundation. The new facilities will greatly help our students,” he said.

Governor Nyaribo said the new structures will accommodate 400 students, with each dormitory having a capacity of 200 learners.

He noted that despite the new facilities, more accommodation is still needed since the school has over 544 boarders.

“The students who will miss space in the new dormitories will benefit after another dormitory is renovated,” said the governor.

Safaricom Greater Western Region General Manager Gunilla Ouko said the company remains committed to supporting communities through investments in education, health and entrepreneurship.

She said the foundation responds to the specific needs of schools, including infrastructure development and provision of learning materials.

Ouko noted that apart from Riomego SDA Senior School, the foundation has also invested in other projects in Nyamira County, including the KSh61 million rehabilitation of Bogesaka D.O.K Primary School and a KSh750,000 water project at St Joseph’s Secondary School.
