Tragic bee attack: 2-year-old twin girls killed, others injured in Homa Bay

A fatal swarm of wild bees descended on a homestead in Kobala Village, Kawino Sub-location, within Rachuonyo South Sub-County, killing two-and-a-half-year-old twin girls and injuring several other residents.

The incident occurred on Tuesday while community members were gathered at a local home for a communal maize-shelling activity.

According to a police report, a swarm of wild bees suddenly emerged from a nearby mango tree and aggressively attacked the crowd, sending everyone scattering for safety.

When the swarm eventually dispersed and residents returned to the homestead, they found that the youngest children, who had been alongside their mothers, had suffered the brunt of the attacks:

Twin sisters Mary Laura and Valleta Sharif, aged two and a half years, sustained severe, multiple stings across their faces and bodies.

They were rushed to Nyang’iela Level 4 Hospital but were tragically pronounced dead on arrival.

A third toddler, aged one and a half years, was rushed to Hawi Private Hospital where she received emergency treatment and was later discharged in fair condition. Several adults also suffered minor stings during the panic.

Police officers visited and processed the crime scene.

The bodies of the twin girls were transferred to the Rachuonyo County Hospital mortuary, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted.
