Rare quintuplet birth in Marsabit ends in tragedy as three infants die, surviving two flown to Nairobi

What began as an extraordinary medical marvel turned into tragic heartbreak for a 20-year-old first-time mother from Oltorot in Loyiangalani, who unexpectedly delivered quintuplets at Marsabit County Referral Hospital, only to lose three of her newborns shortly after birth.

The young woman gave birth to three boys and two girls through normal delivery at around 4pm, placing her among a rare few Kenyan mothers to bring five babies into the world in a single birth.

The delivery came as a complete surprise to both the mother and the medical team.

An ultrasound scan carried out earlier during her pregnancy had indicated she was expecting twins.

It was only in the delivery room that the full reality unfolded, as attending health workers found themselves receiving five infants instead of two.

All five babies arrived prematurely at an estimated six to seven months of gestation, with birth weights ranging between a fragile 840 grams and 1,000 grams.

Shortly after the delivery, Marsabit County Referral Hospital CEO Kussu Abduba confirmed that the mother and all five newborns were initially in stable condition.

Tragedy struck soon after

Despite intensive efforts by the hospital’s healthcare team, three of the infants succumbed to complications linked to extreme prematurity and critically low birth weight.

Following advice from medical specialists, the two surviving infants were airlifted to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi to receive specialized neonatal care unavailable at the county facility.

Both babies remain admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at KNH, where specialized teams are closely monitoring them as they fight for survival, while their mother continues her recovery.
