A partnership between the Kenyan government, the Mairura Foundation, Nyanchwa Adventist Mission Hospital, and volunteer doctors from the United States has brought free, specialized healthcare services to thousands of residents in Kisii County.
Stephen Isaboke, Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunication, announced that a team of 21 American medical professionals, including surgeons, nurses, and support staff, visited the county to provide free treatment.
He noted that the initiative originally launched in 2023 at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital before expanding this year to Nyanchwa Adventist Mission Hospital, a move that has enabled more patients to access care closer to home.
During the event, Isaboke also encouraged local residents to register for the Social Health Authority (SHA), highlighting that approximately 465,000 people in Kisii County have already signed up.
Dr Edward Mairura stated that the orthopedic camp continues to grow each year.
“Around 2,000 patients have been screened during this year’s clinic, with hundreds receiving specialized treatment for bone and joint issues affecting the hips, knees, feet, ankles, and hands. The team successfully performed several complex orthopedic operations, including knee replacements,” said Dr Mairura adding that, “They would return in the future to treat the many patients who still require care.”
Nyanchwa Adventist Mission Hospital CEO Duncan Mosioma said that, “The camp attracted patients not only from Kisii, but also from neighboring Nyamira, Migori, and Narok counties.”
Pst Job Obara, Executive Secretary of the South Kenya Conference, commended the cooperation among all partners.
Obara reaffirmed that the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which owns the hospital, remains deeply committed to community service and welcomes future partnerships.
The impact of the program was evident among its beneficiaries. Thomas Moracha, who received treatment during the camp, shared that he had suffered for years from debilitating injuries sustained in a boda boda accident.
Following his procedure, he reported feeling significantly better and expressed profound gratitude to the medical team for giving him a second chance at a life free from constant pain.
