Tragedy in Gautine as fire claims 100 -year-old woman and another drowns in Samburu borehole

Two separate domestic accidents in Maara and Samburu North sub-counties have claimed the lives of two women, according to local authorities.

In Gautine village, Maara Sub-County, a 100-year-old woman died after a fire engulfed her one-room timber house on Sunday evening.

The victim, identified as Beatrice Mukawaiti, lived alone in Mugumango Location.

She was last seen alive around 6:30pm after lighting a small fire near her bed for warmth.

Her body was recovered at the scene and transferred to the Chuka Level 5 County Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.

Police are still investigating the exact cause of the blaze.

In a separate incident in Baragoi, Samburu North Sub-County, 49-year-old Emejen Erith tragically drowned after slipping into an open borehole while drawing water on September 13.

Emergency responders and local residents retrieved her body from the site.

Preliminary reports indicate she fell headfirst into the shaft, sustaining shoulder injuries in the fall.

Her body has been moved to the Baragoi Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

These incidents highlight growing concerns over household fire hazards and open water sources in rural and peri-urban areas.
