MSI Reproductive Choices Kenya has called on the government and donors to increase funding for contraceptive supplies amid concerns over reduced global funding.

The organisation made the call on Friday, ahead of World Contraception Day, which will be marked on Saturday, September 26.

MSI Kenya said cuts in funding from governments, including the collapse of USAID, have put global contraceptive supplies under increasing pressure.

The organisation warned that existing supplies, which have helped cushion women and girls from the impact of funding cuts, are running out, potentially leaving millions without access to contraception.

MSI Reproductive Choices Kenya Country Director Dr Walter Obita said contraception plays an important role in helping women and girls make decisions about their health and families.

“World Contraception Day is an opportunity to celebrate the power of reproductive choice and recognise what access to contraception makes possible for women, girls and their families,” Dr Obita said.

He said the celebration should be accompanied by action to ensure contraceptive services and supplies remain available to those who need them.

According to MSI Kenya, access to contraception can help girls remain in school, enable women to pursue careers, and allow families to plan when to have children.

The organisation has urged the government and donors to close the funding gap, increase investment in contraceptive supplies, and respond to the growing demand.

Dr Obita said reproductive choice is important to women’s health, rights and equality, adding that MSI Kenya will continue advocating for increased access to contraception.
