Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has raised concerns over complaints from parents in Nairobi about children being served raw and poorly cooked chapatis in some schools.
In a statement, Owino said parents had raised concerns over the quality of meals being served to learners, warning that children deserve safe, nutritious and properly prepared food while at school.
“This is unacceptable. Our children deserve safe, nutritious and properly prepared meals,” Owino said.
The MP said the concerns could expose children to preventable health problems, adding that he had taken note of the complaints from parents across Nairobi.
“Stay put, Nairobians. We hear you, and we know what you are going through,” he said.
Owino further pledged that, if given the opportunity to lead Nairobi, his administration would ensure learners receive well-cooked, nutritious and balanced meals in schools.
He also promised to extend the school feeding programme to secondary schools across Nairobi.
According to Owino, the proposed meals would be provided free of charge, with parents not required to pay any money for the programme.
“Our children come first,” he said.
His remarks come amid continued concerns over the quality and accessibility of school meals, with parents calling for proper standards to be maintained in the preparation and distribution of food served to learners.
