Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza third impeachment, will she survive this time?

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has made history once again, but not in the way she would have hoped.

For the third time since taking office in 2022, Mwangaza has been impeached, setting a new record.

The Meru County Assembly voted on Thursday, with 49 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) casting their votes in favor of her removal, 17 voting against, and three abstaining.

The matter now moves to the Senate, which will determine if the grounds for her impeachment are substantial enough to justify her removal from office.

This marks an unprecedented milestone, surpassing the previous record held by the former Embu governor, who was impeached twice by the county assembly.

An anonymous MCA revealed that preparations for the impeachment motion were intense, with many members spending the day before the vote within the assembly building, strategizing and finalizing their positions.

The Senate’s upcoming decision will be crucial in determining whether Governor Mwangaza’s tenure will come to an end or if she will overcome this latest challenge.
