UN-Habitat and Busia County Government Forge 5-Year Partnership

UN Habitat and the County Government of Busia, led by Paul Nyongesa Otuoma, have signed a five-year collaboration agreement to implement sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Busia County.

This partnership aims to enhance services for residents in both Busia, Kenya, and Busia, Uganda.

UN-Habitat’s East and Horn of Africa Sub-Regional Director, Mr. Ishaku Maitumbi, affirmed the global body’s commitment to exploring various collaborative opportunities to improve the livelihoods of local communities.

The partnership will focus on key areas such as solid waste management, urban planning, housing, gender mainstreaming, youth issues, and promoting cross-border trade to boost the region’s economy.

Dr Otuoma emphasized the importance of collaboration for effective service delivery.

He further expressed gratitude for the partnership and UN-Habitat’s willingness to bring in more partners to address various needs and expertise areas.

The county boss also highlighted the need for a specific model to tackle cross-border challenges, noting that the shift to a one-stop border point had impacted local livelihoods.

He stressed the importance of integrating local communities into East African trade to create wealth and jobs for young people.

Martin Katamba, representing the Ugandan delegation, expressed appreciation for the initiative, emphasizing its potential to improve livelihoods for residents of both countries.

This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards achieving sustainable development and improving the quality of life for the people in the Busia region.
