The Rongo Catholic Church sisters’ convent are in deep pain after a shocking discovery yesterday (Sunday) morning.
The body of a trainee nun, who has been missing since Thursday, October 24, was found inside a sewer pit within the parish convent on Sunday, October 27.
Homa Bay Diocese Vicar General Gabriel Atieno confirmed the incident, stating that the body of the 23-year-old nun, Yvonne Jirangwa, was discovered floating in a sewer pit by another nun on her way to the farm.
After Yvonne went missing, the sisters reported her disappearance to Rongo Police Station following unsuccessful efforts to locate her.
Father Atieno said the parish is collaborating closely with the police to determine the circumstances surrounding Yvonne’s death.
He expressed that her passing is a significant loss to the parish, where she had been actively involved in community service over the past three years.
Rongo Sub-County Police Commander Salim Fundi reported that police had been actively searching for the trainee nun after her disappearance was reported by the church, only to find her body within the convent grounds.
The body has been moved to Rosewood Hospital mortuary for post mortem examination as investigations continue.
