Fisherman narrowly escapes death after hippo attack

A 24-year-old fisherman is receiving treatment at Mbita Sub County Hospital after he narrowly escaped death following an attack by a hippo while fishing in Kombe Uyoga beach in Lake Victoria, Homabay county.

The incident that happened on Monday morning, left Ruben Otieno drenched in his own blood, staggering to safety after escaping the sharp teeth of the hippo.

His colleague, 34-year-old Dicken Orwa was lucky to have escaped unharmed.

According to Edward Oremo, chairman of the Homa Bay county beach management unit, the hippo struck their boat, causing it to capsize.

Oremo expressed concerns over the rising cases of human-wildlife conflict in the area, urging the government and Kenya Wildlife Service to intervene.
