Tragedy at Dusk: Retired Agricultural Officer Killed in Swarm of Bees Attack

UGUNJA: A retired agricultural officer was fatally attacked by a swarm of bees in Rang’ala location, Ugunja sub-county, on Tuesday, April 15.

Charles Ochomo Ombet was working on his farm alongside a tractor operator when the swarm descended, described by witnesses as a wave of thousands of bees.

The sudden attack left little time for escape.

According to Rang’ala location Chief, Barack Agoko, the two men were in the middle of ploughing the land when the insects struck without warning.

“The deceased was in his farm when the tragic incident occurred. A swarm of bees came out of nowhere and attacked them,” said Agoko.

Efforts to fend off the bees proved futile. The tractor operator managed to flee, but Ombet was overwhelmed.

He collapsed as the swarm continued to sting him, and bystanders were drawn to the scene by his desperate cries for help.

The bees eventually dispersed, leaving the unconscious Ombet behind. He was rushed to a nearby health facility in Rang’ala and later referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital, about 18 kilometers away. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body is currently at the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination. Police have launched investigations into the incident.
